Interesting School Results
Once again, we are very proud of the efforts and achievements of all of our children and especially of the Year 2 and Year 6 children who all did their very best in their Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs). You will recall that there was much in the local and national press about how difficult this year’s tests were going to be and, indeed, how children had to achieve higher marks to achieve an ‘expected’ result.
While the other areas are assessed by a standardised test, achievement in Writing is determined by Teacher Assessment by judging if each child has completely mastered all the criteria for Y6. We were determined to apply this criteria extremely rigorously as we always have high expectations of our children. Despite achieving good results in the externally marked ‘English Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation’ test, just 58% of our children were able to demonstrate that they could confidently and consistently apply these skills in their writing. This is disappointing and obviously an area for us to focus on next year.
However, overall in the Tests, our children performed extremely well, achieving results almost in line with Devon schools as a whole, and compared to results nationally. In addition, and despite achievement in Writing being below our expectations, I am pleased to report that our school met the Government’s floor targets for achievement in Reading and Maths and also in progress from KS1 in all subjects, including writing.
